🚀 Example of SSE-based MCP Server and Client MCP

This demonstrates the working mode of an SSE-based MCP server and an independent MCP client tool, inspired by the original discussion here.

⚠️ Important Note

Make sure to provide ANTHROPIC_API_KEY in the .env file or environment variables.

Basic Usage

uv run weather.py

✨ Features

This means that the MCP server can now be a running process, and the agent (client) can connect to it, use it, and disconnect from it at any time. In other words, the SSE-based server and client can be decoupled processes (possibly even on decoupled nodes). This is different from the STDIO-based model, which requires the client to start the server as a child process.

Installation via Smithery

To automatically install the SSE-based MCP server and client via Smithery:

npx -y @smithery/cli install @sidharthrajaram/mcp-sse --client claude

🔧 Technical Details

Server

weather.py is an SSE-based MCP server that provides some tools based on the National Weather Service API. It is adapted from the example STDIO server implementation in the MCP documentation.

By default, the server runs on 0.0.0.0:8080, but it can be configured via command-line arguments, for example:

uv run weather.py --host <your host> --port <your port>

Client

client.py is an MCP client that connects to and uses the tools in the SSE-based MCP server. It is adapted from the example STDIO client implementation in the MCP documentation.

By default, the client connects to the SSE endpoint via command-line arguments, for example:
