🛠️ Simple MCP Example Using Claude and Local JSON HTTP Server

This guide walks you through a basic setup to use Claude (MacOS Desktop Version) to interact with a local mock JSON server via MCP (Model-Computer Protocol).

📦 Installation

Prerequisites

• Installed Node.js
• Claude for MacOS (Download from Anthropic)
• Basic understanding of local servers and the Claude MCP tool

Step-by-Step Setup

1. Install Dependencies Install the required packages in the project root directory:

   npm install
   npm run mock-api
   npm run mcp-server
   

   Edit the claude_desktop_config.json file (usually located in ~/.claude/ or the application's internal configuration folder) and add your MCP server configuration:

   • Restart Claude.
   • After restarting, you should see two new MCP tools below the Claude input field, each with a 🛠️ hammer icon.
   • Test Claude with prompts like:

     "Get all posts" "Insert a post with id 500, title "Created by Claude", and view count 123" Claude will use the configured MCP tool to send actual requests to the local mock server. Make sure to prompt Claude while running the JSON server and MCP server.

Basic Usage

To start the servers and configure Claude:

npm install
npm run mock-api
npm run mcp-server

Edit the claude_desktop_config.json file as shown above.

Advanced Usage

To test the setup, run:

npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector node build/index.js
