🚀 Set Up a Remote MCP Server on Cloudflare

Let's get a remote MCP server based on Cloudflare Workers up and running, integrated with OAuth login functionality!

🚀 Quick Start

🌐 Local Development

# Clone the repository
git clone git@github.com:cloudflare/ai.git

# Install dependencies
cd ai
npm install

# Run locally
npx nx dev remote-mcp-server

You should be able to open the page in your browser via http://localhost:8787/.

🔗 Connect MCP Inspector to Your Server

To explore the new MCP API, you can use the MCP Inspector.

• Start it with npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector.
• In the Inspector, switch the transport type to SSE, enter http://localhost:8787/sse in the URL field to connect to your MCP server, and then click "Connect".
• You'll be redirected to a (simulated) login page. Enter any email and password to log in.
• After successful login, you can list and call any defined tools in the Inspector!

🔗 Connect Claude Desktop to Your Local MCP Server

Although the Inspector is powerful, we prefer to integrate it with Claude! Follow the Anthropic's Quick Start Guide, open Settings > Developer > Edit Profile in Claude Desktop.

Open the file in a text editor and replace it with the following configuration:

This will run a local proxy, enabling Claude to communicate with your MCP server via HTTP.

When opening Claude, a login interface should appear in the browser window. You can see a list of available tools. Enter the correct instructions as prompted, and Claude will call the tools on the MCP server.

🚀 Deploy to Cloudflare

1. npx wrangler kv namespace create OAUTH_KV
2. Follow the instructions to add the kv namespace ID to the wrangler.jsonc file.
3. npm run deploy

🔗 Call Your Newly Deployed Remote MCP Server from a Remote MCP Client

Just as you did in the "Local Development" section, run the MCP Inspector: npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector@latest

Then enter the address of your MCP server deployed on Cloudflare in the Inspector and follow the prompts.

🐞 Debugging Tips

• If you encounter issues, check the console for error messages.
• Ensure that all dependencies are installed correctly and the network connection is normal.
• Refer to the documentation or community for further support.
