An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that provides access to Microsoft Outlook email functions, allowing large language models and other MCP clients to read, search, and manage emails through a standardized interface.

The Outlook MCP Server enables clients to interact with Microsoft Outlook's email capabilities. To get started, follow the installation and configuration steps below.

📦 Installation

Prerequisites

• Windows operating system
• Python 3.11 or higher
• Microsoft Outlook installed and configured with an active account
• Claude Desktop or other MCP-compatible clients

Steps

1. Clone or download this repository.
2. Install the required dependencies:

pip install mcp>=1.2.0 pywin32>=305

3. Configure Claude Desktop (or other MCP clients) to automatically start the server.

Available Tools

The server provides the following tools and their detailed functions:

1. list_folders:

   • List all available email folders in Outlook.
   • Display the folder hierarchy up to three levels deep.
   • Return a formatted list of folders and subfolders.

2. list_recent_emails:

   • List email titles within a specified number of days (1 - 30).
   • Optionally specify the folder to search (default is the inbox).
   • Cache results for detailed viewing.
   • Return the number of found emails and instructions for viewing them.

3. search_emails:

   • Search for emails by contact name or keywords.
   • Support the OR operator for multiple search terms.
   • Search in the subject, sender name, and body content.
   • Return the number of matches and instructions for viewing them.

4. view_email_cache:

   • Browse cached emails, displaying 5 per page.
   • Show the email subject, sender, received time, and read status.
   • Provide previous/next page navigation.
   • Requires prior use of list_recent_emails or search_emails.

5. get_email_by_number:

   • Retrieve detailed content of a specific email by number.
   • Show the full body, recipients, and attachments.
   • Requires an email number from the cached list.
   • Provide an option to reply to the email.

6. reply_to_email_by_number:

   • Reply to a specific email by number.
   • Use the email number from the cached list.
   • Send a reply with specified body content.
   • Maintain the original email thread.
   • Optionally specify custom recipients for the "To" and "CC" fields.
     • Default behavior is to reply to all (sender + CC).
     • Allow overriding default recipients if needed.

7. compose_email:

   • Create and send a new email.
   • Support recipient, subject, and body content.
   • Optionally use the CC field to add more recipients.
   • Send the email through the Outlook client.

Example Workflow

1. Use list_folders to view all available email folders.
2. Use list_recent_emails to view recent emails (e.g., within the past 7 days).
3. Use search_emails to search for emails by keywords.
4. Use view_email_cache to browse cached emails.
5. Use get_email_by_number to view detailed information of a specific email.
6. Use reply_to_email_by_number to reply to an email.
7. Use compose_email to create and send a new email.

Security Considerations

⚠️ Important Note

This server can access your Outlook email account and read, send, and manage emails. Use it only with trusted MCP clients and in a secure environment.

Limitations

• Currently only supports plain text emails (no HTML support).
• Maximum email history limit is 30 days.
• Search functionality relies on Outlook's built-in search.
• Only supports basic email functions (no calendar, contacts, etc.).
