📦 Installation

Dependencies

You need to install Python 3.10 or higher, and also install uv/uvx.

Installing a UCI - Compatible Chess Engine

To run this project properly, you need to install a UCI - compatible chess engine, such as Stockfish (tested with Stockfish 17).

• Download from the official website: You can download Stockfish from https://stockfishchess.org/download/.
• Installation on macOS: On macOS, you can use brew install stockfish to install it.

💻 Usage Examples

Finding the Binary File Path

You need to find the path to the binary file that supports UCI features. For example, by default, after installing Stockfish on macOS via Brew, the path is /usr/local/bin/stockfish.

Configuration in MCP Settings

Further configuration needs to be done in the MCP settings. For Claude Desktop, this is the file claude_desktop_config.json (which can be found and edited in the Developer section of the Settings menu). The full paths under different operating systems are as follows:

• macOS: ~/Library/Application\ Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
• Windows: %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
• Linux: ~/.config/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Adding MCP Configuration

Add the following MCP configuration according to your chosen running method (e.g., in Claude Desktop):

Uvx (Recommended)

Uvx can directly run Python applications by name, ensure all dependencies, and run them in an automatically created virtual environment. This is the recommended way to run the chess - uci - mcp bridge. Set your MCP server configuration file (e.g., Claude Desktop configuration) as follows:

Available MCP Commands

The bridge provides the following MCP commands:

1. analyze - Analyze a chess position specified by a FEN string.
2. get_best_move - Get the best move for a certain chess position.
3. set_position - Set the current chess position.
4. engine_info - Get information about the chess engine.
