🚀 MCP PostgreSQL Query Server

This is an implementation of an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for querying PostgreSQL databases in read-only mode, specifically designed for Claude Desktop and other MCP clients.

This project offers a secure way to query PostgreSQL databases in read-only mode, integrating seamlessly with Claude Desktop via the MCP protocol. It comes with built - in SQL query validation and query timeout protection.

✨ Features

• Read - Only Access: The server only allows SELECT queries, preventing write operations on the database.
• Timeout Protection: All queries that are not completed within 10 seconds will be terminated to prevent long - term blocking.
• Secure Connection: Communication is encrypted via SSL, enabled by default.

📦 Installation

Prerequisites

• Node.js (v14 or higher)
• npm (provided with Node.js)
• PostgreSQL database (connection details provided via the command line)

Steps

💻 Usage Examples

Connecting with Claude Desktop

You can configure Claude Desktop to automatically start and connect to the MCP server:

1. Access Claude Desktop's configuration file:
   • Open Claude Desktop.
   • Go to Settings > Developer > Edit Configuration.
   • This will open the configuration file in the default text editor.
2. Add postgres - query - server to the mcpServers section of claude_desktop_config.json:

3. Replace /path/to/your/ with the actual project directory path.

General Usage

1. Build the server:
   • Install dependencies and run npm run build.
2. Configure the PostgreSQL connection:

   • After restarting Claude Desktop, select the newly added MCP server for queries.
