A prototype of a Zotero MCP server that allows you to first search all your Zotero notes via a query and then retrieve the full - text content of the specific item found.

The interaction with Zotero is based on the API client: Pyzotero. Pyzotero is distributed under the Blue Oak Model License 1.0.0.

I use the 5ire MCP client as the chat interface.

This Zotero MCP server enables users to search Zotero notes through queries and retrieve the full - text content of specific items. It interacts with Zotero using the Pyzotero API client and uses the 5ire MCP client as the chat interface.

📦 Installation

Install using the uv package manager: uv package manager

Clone the repository:

git clone https://github.com/TomasSchweizer/Zotero-MCP-Server.git

Add a .env file in the root directory of the repository and set your Zotero library ID and library user environment variables:

LIBRARY_ID="xxxxxxxx" # 8 digits
LIBRARY_TYPE="user"

Enter the Zotero-MCP-Server folder and set up the venv:

uv venv

Install the required dependencies:

uv sync

Install the package:

uv pip install .

Or install it in editable mode (if you want to change the package):

uv pip install -e .
