What is the Remote MCP Server?

The Remote MCP Server is a model context protocol service built on Azure Functions, allowing developers to run custom tools and functions in the cloud. It provides a secure and scalable way to handle the context interaction of AI models.

How to use the Remote MCP Server?

You can connect to and use the MCP server through a simple command-line tool or the VS Code extension, supporting both local development and cloud deployment modes.

Applicable scenarios

Suitable for scenarios such as remote AI model interaction, code snippet management, and team collaborative development. It is particularly suitable for the backend services of AI-assisted development tools like GitHub Copilot.

Main features

Cloud deployment
Easily deploy to the cloud through Azure Functions to achieve high availability and scalability.
Local development support
Supports local running and debugging, providing a smooth development experience.
Security authentication
Built-in API key authentication, supporting advanced security features such as OAuth and VNET isolation.
Multi-language support
Provides multiple implementation versions in.NET/C#, Node.js/TypeScript, and Python.
Advantages
Rapid deployment: Complete cloud deployment within minutes using the azd up command.
Flexible scaling: Based on Azure Functions, it can automatically scale according to demand.
Security guarantee: Uses API key authentication by default and supports multiple security enhancement options.
Multi-platform support: Compatible with multiple clients such as VS Code and Copilot.
Limitations
An Azure subscription is required to use the cloud deployment function.
Local development requires installing dependency environments such as Docker.
Advanced security features require additional configuration.

How to use

Prepare the local environment
Install necessary tools such as the.NET 8 SDK, Azure Functions Core Tools, and Azure Developer CLI.
Run locally
Start the Functions host in the src directory for local testing.
Connect the client
Connect to the local server in VS Code or the MCP Inspector.
Cloud deployment
Use the azd up command to deploy to the Azure cloud.
Connect to the remote server
After obtaining the system key, configure the remote connection on the client.
