🚀 Running a Remote MCP Server on Cloudflare

Let's set up a remote MCP server running on Cloudflare Workers and integrate OAuth login functionality!

🚀 Quick Start

💻 Local Development

# Clone the repository
git clone git@github.com:cloudflare/ai.git

# Install dependencies
cd ai
npm install

# Run locally
npx nx dev remote-mcp-server

You should be able to open http://localhost:8787/ in your browser to view it.

🔗 Connecting MCP Inspector to Your Server

To explore the new MCP API, you can use MCP Inspector.

• Start it: npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector
• In the Inspector, switch the transport type to SSE, enter http://localhost:8787/sse as the URL of the MCP server, and then click "Connect".
• You'll be redirected to a (simulated) login page. Enter any email and password to log in.
• After successful login, you should be redirected back to the MCP Inspector and be able to list and call any defined tools!

🔗 Connecting Claude Desktop to the Local MCP Server

While the MCP inspector is great, what we really want to do is integrate it with Claude! Follow Anthropic's Quick Start Guide, go to Settings > Developer > Edit Profile in Claude Desktop. Open the file and replace it with the following content:

This will run a local proxy that allows Claude to communicate with your MCP server over HTTP. After opening Claude, the default browser window should guide you through the login process. You should see a list of available tools in the bottom-right corner. Follow the prompts to enter the correct instructions, and Claude will call MCP's addition tool.

🚀 Deployment to Cloudflare

1. npx wrangler kv namespace create OAUTH_KV
2. Follow the instructions to add the kv namespace ID to wrangler.jsonc
3. npm run deploy

🔗 Calling Your Newly Deployed Remote MCP Server from a Remote MCP Client

Just as in the "Local Development" section, run the MCP inspector: npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector@latest Then, in the Inspector, enter your Worker URL (e.g., worker-name.account-name.workers.dev/sse) as the connection URL for the MCP server and click "Connect". You have successfully connected the MCP server to the remote MCP client.

Update the Claude configuration file to point to your workers.dev URL (e.g., https://worker-name.account-name.workers.dev/sse) as follows:

⚠️ Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues, check the following:

1. Ensure that the server is correctly deployed to Cloudflare.
2. Check your network connection to ensure that you can access the MCP server.
3. Check the console or logs for more information.
