The WordPress MCP Server is a versatile tool that enables seamless content publication to WordPress sites. It offers a range of features and can be configured and run in multiple ways to suit different needs.

📦 Installation

1. Create a virtual environment using UV:

   uv venv
   .venv\Scripts\activate
   

2. Install dependencies:

   uv pip install -r requirements.txt
   

3. Configure WordPress credentials:

   • Rename .env.example to .env (or create a new .env file).
   • Update the WordPress site URL, username, and application password information.

Basic Usage

Run as an MCP Server

Run the server in MCP mode:

python main.py --mcp

Run as a Standalone API

Run as a standalone FastAPI application:

python main.py

The API will be available at http://localhost:8000.

• TEST_CONNECTION - Test the connection status to the WordPress site.

Category and Tag Management

The WordPress MCP server now supports advanced category and tag management:

Use the PREPARE_ARTICLE_METADATA Tool

This tool allows you to:

1. Check the existence of categories and tags on the WordPress site.
2. Automatically create non-existent categories or tags.
3. Return the IDs of all categories and tags for use with PUBLISH_ARTICLE.

Example workflow:

1. Call PREPARE_ARTICLE_METADATA and pass category and tag names.
2. Retrieve the corresponding ID information.
3. Use these IDs to publish content with PUBLISH_ARTICLE.

Featured Image Support

The WordPress MCP server now supports adding featured images to articles:

Use in PUBLISH_ARTICLE

You can add a featured image in the following two ways:

1. Via URL: Provide the image_url parameter, pointing to the direct link of the image.

   "image_url": "https://example.com/path/to/image.jpg"
   

2. Via Base64: Provide the image_base64 parameter, containing Base64-encoded image data.

   "image_base64": "iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAA..."
   

3. Custom File Name: Optionally specify the file name of the uploaded image.

   "image_filename": "my-custom-image-name.jpg"
   

The server will:

• Download the image (if provided via URL) or decode the Base64 data.
• Upload the image to the WordPress site.
• Set it as the featured image of the article.
• Return the media resource ID in the response.

Use in the Standalone API

When using the standalone API, you can provide a featured image in the following ways:

• Use the image form field for file upload.
• Use the image_url form field to provide a URL link.

Environment Variable Support

All tools now support setting default values via environment variables (from the .env file):

• WP_SITE_URL - The URL address of your WordPress site.
• WP_USERNAME - Your WordPress username.
• WP_PASSWORD - Your application password.

This means you can call the tools without explicitly providing parameters, as long as they are configured in the environment variables.
