The Slack MCP Server is designed to empower Claude to interact seamlessly with Slack workspaces through the Slack API.

Tools

1. slack_list_channels

   • Lists public channels in the workspace.
   • Optional inputs:
     • limit (number, default: 100, max: 200): Maximum number of channels to return.
     • cursor (string): Identifier for the next page of the pagination cursor.
   • Return result: A list of channels with IDs and other information.

2. slack_post_message

   • Sends a new message to a Slack channel.
   • Required inputs:
     • channel_id (string): ID of the target channel to send the message.
     • text (string): Text of the message to be sent.
   • Return result: Confirmation of message posting and a timestamp.

3. slack_reply_to_thread

   • Replies to a specific message thread.
   • Required inputs:
     • channel_id (string): Channel containing the thread.
     • thread_ts (string): Timestamp of the parent message.
     • text (string): Reply text.
   • Return result: Confirmation of the reply and a timestamp.

4. slack_add_reaction

   • Adds an emoji reaction to a message.
   • Required inputs:
     • channel_id (string): Channel containing the message.
     • timestamp (string): Timestamp of the message to react to.
     • reaction (string): Name of the emoji (without colons).
   • Return result: Confirmation of the reaction.

5. slack_get_channel_history

   • Retrieves recent messages in a channel.
   • Required input:
     • channel_id (string): ID of the target channel.
   • Optional input:
     • limit (number, default: 10): Number of messages to retrieve.
   • Return result: A list of messages with content and other metadata.

6. slack_get_thread_replies

   • Retrieves all replies under a message thread.
   • Required inputs:
     • channel_id (string): Channel containing the thread.
     • thread_ts (string): Timestamp of the parent message.
   • Return result: A list of replies with IDs and other information.

7. slack_list_users

   • Retrieves the list of users in the workspace.
   • Optional input:
     • cursor (string): Identifier for the next page of the pagination cursor.
   • Return result: A list of users with information such as user ID, name, and role.

📦 Installation

Create a Slack App

1. Visit the Slack Developer Portal and click "Create New App" to create a new app.
2. Fill in the basic information of the app, such as name and description, and then save.

Configure Permissions

1. Navigate to the settings page of the newly created app.
2. Go to the "Permissions" section.
3. Enable the required bot permissions, for example:
   • bot: Allows the bot user to join channels.
   • channels:read: Reads channel information.
   • messages:read: Reads message history.
   • messages:write: Sends messages.

Install the App

1. Return to the app settings page and find the "Install App" option.
2. Follow the prompts to authorize your Slack workspace and complete the addition of the bot user.

Obtain Team ID and Bot Token

1. After installation, find and record your Team ID in the "Basic Information" section.
2. Go to the "Tokens & Signing Secret" section, generate a new Bot User OAuth Token, and then copy the token.

🛠️ Troubleshooting

If you encounter permission issues, please check:

1. Whether all required permissions have been correctly added to the Slack app.
2. Whether the app has been successfully installed in the target workspace.
3. Whether the token and team ID are accurately configured in the relevant settings.
4. Whether the app has been added to the channels it needs to access.
