MCP Server Filesystem

🚀 File System MCP Server

This is a File System Operation Model Context Protocol (MCP) server implemented in Go, inspired by Anthropic's reference implementation. See modelcontextprotocol/servers for details.

Compared with the reference implementation, the significant differences in this project include:

• The get_file_info and directory_tree commands return JSON data.
• The search_files tool supports exclusion patterns similar to .gitignore.

🚀 Quick Start

📦 Installation

Install the server using the following command:

go install github.com/optistar/mcp-server-filesystem/cmd/mcp-server-filesystem@latest

The executable file will be installed in the Go binary directory, typically ~/go/bin. If this path is not in your PATH environment variable, please configure it accordingly.

You can also change the installation directory by setting the GOBIN environment variable.

🧪 Testing

The project includes a complete test suite to ensure the server runs as expected.

• You can run the tests normally using the go test command.
• A tester command packages the test suite as an MCP client, which can be used to test MCP server commands or other MCP server implementations.

The server provides the following tools for interacting with the file system:

• create_directory: Create a new directory or ensure the specified directory exists.
• directory_tree: Get a recursive tree view of files and directories and return it in a JSON structure.
• edit_file: Perform line-based edits on text files.
• get_file_info: Retrieve detailed metadata for a file or directory.
• list_allowed_directories: Return a list of all directories that the server is allowed to access.
• list_directory: Get a detailed inventory of all files and directories under the specified path.
• move_file: Move or rename files and directories.
• read_file: Read the complete content of a file from the file system.
• read_multiple_files: Read the contents of multiple files simultaneously.
• search_files: Recursively search for files and directories that match a specific pattern.
• write_file: Create a new file or completely overwrite an existing file to write new content.
