This project aims to create an MCP server that allows running any type of Microsoft 365 CLI commands, initially for use in Visual Studio Code and future support for more development scenarios.

💡 Project Description

Currently, this is a project in the development phase, more of a proof-of-concept. The goal is to create an MCP server that allows running any type of Microsoft 365 CLI commands. The primary aim is to make it usable in Visual Studio Code so that the GitHub Copilot Agent can call it. In the future, this MCP server should be distributed as a dedicated VS Code extension or a sub-extension of the SPFx Toolkit VS Code extension. In the long run, this MCP server not only supports running Microsoft 365 CLI commands but may also have more functions, such as helping to develop Microsoft 365 applications, like creating SPFx web parts, extensions, or Teams applications, and even supporting the GitHub Copilot Agent.

🚀 How to Build and Run

First, run npm install to install all dependencies.

Then, build it with the following command:

npm run build

To test this tool, you need to create an Entra application request and a certificate so that the MCP server can authenticate to Microsoft 365 as an application. To create a certificate and an app registration with the required scopes and add it to your tenant (including the certificate), run the createApp.ps1 script and follow the instructions. Most fields can be left blank; just provide a password. Since the script uses the Microsoft 365 CLI to create the application request and other things, you need to install the tool globally first: visit here to learn how to install it.

Using the Inspector

Step 1: Register an App and Get a Certificate

In the createApp.ps1 script, enter information in the following order:

1. Tenant URL (e.g., https://tenanttocheck.sharepoint.com)
2. Application Name
3. Redirect URI

After running the script, you will get a JSON file with a certificate. Please keep this certificate safely.

Step 2: Run the MCP Server

Start the MCP server with the following command:

node index.js

Make sure all dependencies are installed before running the command, and the environment variable NODE_ENV is set to development or production.

Using in VS Code

Configure the MCP Server

Edit or create the .vscode/mcp-servers.json file in the project root directory and add the following content:

Using in VS Code

1. Open VS Code and load your project.
2. In the bottom status bar, click the "MCP Server" icon and select "Add or Configure MCP Server".
3. Fill in the relevant information:
   • Command: node index.js
   • Environment Variables:
     • NODE_ENV: development
     • REPLACE_SLASHES_IN_REDIRECT_URIS: true

After completing these steps, you should be able to see four newly added tools and start interacting with GitHub Copilot.
