🚀 Tutorial: Running Two MCP Servers in Visual Studio Code

This tutorial explains how to use Go to deploy an MCP server, deploy another Node server, and use Visual Studio Code as an MCP client.

📋 Overview

As of April 2025, most MCP tutorials and demonstrations are mainly targeted at the Claude Desktop application. However, if you have GitHub Copilot with proxy mode and use Visual Studio Code as an MCP client, you can also conduct development and testing.

MCP servers are being written in multiple languages. This guide implements two MCP servers. One is written in Go, and the other is written in Node (bun.sh). The Go MCP server is based on the mcp-go package, while the Node server is based on an example in the package repository. The Node package is under my development to obtain the table structure.

❓ What is an MCP Server

An MCP (Model Context Protocol) server is a lightweight program designed to expose specific functions through the standardized Model Context Protocol. This protocol allows applications to provide context for large language models (LLMs) in a secure and efficient manner.

You can think of MCP servers as bridges connecting LLMs with various data sources and tools (both local and remote). They enable LLMs to access and interact with files, databases, APIs, and other services in a controlled way. This makes it easier to build complex workflows and integrate AI models with different systems.

🛠️ Prerequisites

• Visual Studio Code
• GitHub Copilot with proxy mode
• Some knowledge of Go and Go installed
• Some knowledge of Node (or bun.sh) and Node or bun installed

🐹 Building the Go Server

MCP Go Package

For my tests, I used the following example:

Installing Dependencies

Run the following command in the project directory to install all dependencies:

go mod tidy

🟢 Deploying the Node Server

Installing Node and bun

1. Visit the official Node.js website and download and install the version suitable for your operating system.
2. After installation, verify the versions of Node and bun:

node -v
bun -v

Creating the Project Structure

Run the following command in the terminal to create a new Node project:

mkdir my-node-project && cd $_
npm init -y

Installing Dependencies

In the project directory, install the required dependencies:

npm install express

🚀 Deploying Servers in Visual Studio Code

1. Open Visual Studio Code and start the proxy:

   • Click the "GitHub Copilot" icon in the left activity bar.
   • Select "Start Proxy".

2. Register the tools:

   // Go tool
   go run main.go
   
   // Node tool
   node index.js
   

📈 Expected Results

Server Running

In the screenshot, we can see that the MCP servers are running, and 6 tools are registered in VSCode. We can also see that the proxy has created a Go types.go file based on the users schema using two tools.

Query and Result Examples

• Enter in the proxy window: Get the user table schema. Create a structure based on the schema. Notify the user when done.
• Press Enter.
