🚀 MCP Server Scrapli

A basic MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for interacting with network devices via Scrapli.

🚀 What is this?

This project is a proof-of-concept demonstrating how a compatible MCP client (e.g., Claude Desktop) can connect to network devices via SSH. Scrapli is chosen as the connection framework due to its asynchronous capabilities.

📦 Installation

⚠️ Important Note

Scrapli is not compatible with the Windows operating system. Therefore, this MCP server can only be installed on Linux/MacOS. The following guide is specifically for Linux systems.

This project uses UV for package management. You can install it via pip:

pip install uv

Alternatively, you can use cURL to download the installation script:

curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh

After UV is installed, clone this repository and use uv sync to install the dependencies:

git clone https://git.mikelmaeso.com/mmaeso/mcp-server-scrapli.git
cd mcp-server-scrapli
uv sync

🔧 Starting the Server

Activate the virtual environment:

source .venv/bin/activate

Rename the .env.example file to .env and set your device username and password. Finally, start the server using the following command:

uv run main.py

By default, the server will listen on 0.0.0.0 and port 8080, but you can change this behavior via the --host and --port flags:

uv run main.py --host 127.0.0.1 --port 8081

🔧 Using with Claude Desktop

As of April 2025, Claude Desktop can only use an stdio-based MCP server. If you are using Claude Desktop on Windows, the only way to connect to this MCP server is to use an MCP SSE gateway (e.g., mcp-server-and-gw). Follow the installation instructions and add the following configuration to your claude_desktop_config.json file:
