🚀 Example of Model Context Protocol (MCP) for Cursor

This repository contains example implementations of a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that can be used to enhance the functionality of the Cursor IDE.

📖 What is the Model Context Protocol?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open protocol that standardizes how applications provide context information to Large Language Models (LLMs). It allows you to create custom tools that can be used alongside AI assistants in Cursor to enhance AI capabilities.

Imagine MCP as the USB-C port for devices and peripherals:

• Just as USB-C provides a standardized way to connect your devices to various peripherals, MCP provides a standardized way to connect AI models to different data sources and tools.
• It enables AI assistants to access real-time information, perform specialized functions, and go beyond the limitations of their training data.

🚀 Quick Start

Prerequisites

• Node.js (version >= 14)
• npm or yarn package manager
• Cursor IDE (version >= 2023.12)

Setting up the MCP Server

1. Clone this repository:

git clone https://github.com/yourusername/example-mcp.git
cd example-mcp

2. Install dependencies:

npm install @modelcontextprotocol/server express

3. Start the MCP server:

node index.js

Connecting the MCP Server in Cursor

1. Open the Cursor IDE.
2. Click the gear icon in the top-right corner to enter the settings menu.
3. Select "Context" > "Model Context Protocol".
4. Click "Add Server" and enter the following information:
   • Name: Example MCP Server
   • Type: HTTP
   • Address: http://localhost:3000
5. Click "Save".

🔧 MCP Architecture

Components

• MCP Host: The component that provides context information.
• MCP Client: The component that calls MCP services.
• MCP Server: The component that implements specific functions and responds to requests.

👨‍💻 Creating Your Own MCP Server

1. Initialize the project:

mkdir my-mcp-server && cd $_
npm init -y

2. Install dependencies:

npm install @modelcontextprotocol/server express

3. Create the main file index.js:
