Interact with Azure DevOps more conveniently through natural language.

This is a TypeScript-based MCP server that uses axios to call the Azure DevOps REST API for managing Azure DevOps work items.

This server provides the following tools for managing Azure DevOps resources:

• create_work_item: Create new work items (e.g., user stories, bugs, tasks) in Azure DevOps.

  • Required parameters: type (type), title (title).
  • Optional parameters: projectName (project name, default is the current project), description (description), severity (severity), priority (priority), state (state), assignee (assigned to), tags (list of tags).

• query_work_items: Query work items in an Azure DevOps project.

  • Required parameters: projectName (project name, default is the current project), query (query conditions, supporting Azure Query Language).
  • Return: A list of matching work items.

• update_work_item: Update the attributes of an existing work item.

  • Required parameters: id (work item ID), fields (fields to be updated and their values).

• delete_work_item: Delete a specified work item.

  • Required parameters: id (work item ID).

📦 Installation

To use this MCP server, follow these installation steps:

1. Clone the repository:

   git clone https://github.com/yourusername/azure-devops-mcp-server.git
   cd azure-devops-mcp-server
   

2. Install dependencies:

   npm install
   

3. Build the server:

   npm run build
   

4. (Optional) Configure the development environment for automatic rebuild:

   npm run watch

Configuration in Claude Desktop

To use this MCP server in Claude Desktop, follow these configuration steps:

Windows

• Open the %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json file.
• Add the following content under the mcpServers node:

📚 Documentation

Debugging

Since the MCP server communicates via standard input and output, debugging can be challenging. We recommend using the MCP Inspector, which is provided as a package script:

npm run inspector

The inspector will provide a URL for the debugging tool in the browser.
