🚀 Running a Remote MCP Server on Cloudflare

Let's build a remote MCP server based on Cloudflare Workers and integrate OAuth login functionality!

📦 Installation

# Clone the repository
git clone git@github.com:cloudflare/ai.git

# Install dependencies
cd ai
npm install

# Run locally
npx nx dev remote-mcp-server

You should be able to access the service in your browser via http://localhost:8787/.

💻 Usage Examples

Connecting MCP Inspector to Your Server

To explore the new MCP API, you can use the MCP Inspector.

• Start it: npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector
• In the Inspector, switch the transport type to SSE, enter http://localhost:8787/sse in the URL field, and then click "Connect".
• You'll be redirected to a (simulated) user login page. Enter any email and password to log in.
• After successful login, you can list and call any defined tools in the MCP Inspector!

Connecting Claude Desktop to the Local MCP Server

When using Claude, we need to update the configuration file so that it can communicate with our MCP server. Follow the Anthropic's Quick Start Guide, open the settings in Claude Desktop, and edit the configuration file. Replace the content of the configuration file with the following:

In this way, Claude will communicate with your MCP server through the local proxy. After starting Claude, a browser window will open and prompt you to log in. After completing the login, the tool list will be displayed in the bottom - right corner.

🔧 Deployment to Cloudflare

1. Create a KV namespace using wrangler:

wrangler kv:namespace create mcp-namespace --binding=MCP_NAMESPACE

2. Update the wrangler.jsonc file and add the following content:

💻 Calling from a Remote MCP Client

1. Start the Inspector: npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector
2. Enter https://your-deployed-endpoint/sse in the URL field and click "Connect".

🔧 Debugging

• If you encounter problems, try restarting Claude or directly connecting to the MCP server via the command line:

npx mcp-remote http://localhost:8787/sse

• If the problem still cannot be solved, check and clear the authentication file:

rm ~/.config/mcp/auth

By following the above steps, you can successfully complete the entire process from local development to remote deployment.
