This project implements a server based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing AI agents to interact with GitLab repositories. It offers the following capabilities:

• List available GitLab projects
• Retrieve detailed information and comments of merge requests
• Obtain the code diff of merge requests
• Add comments on merge requests
• Add annotations on specific lines of the code diff
• Get detailed information about issues

📦 Installation

⚡ Using Smithery

To automatically install GitLab MR MCP via Smithery for use with Claude Desktop:

🔧 Prerequisites

• Node.js
• A GitLab access token with API access
• GitLab project ID(s)

📖 Setup

1. Clone this repository.
2. Install dependencies:

npm install

3. Add the following to your MCP client configuration:

• get_projects Retrieve a list of all GitLab projects you can access.

• list_open_merge_requests List all open merge requests in a specified project.

• get_merge_request_details Get detailed information about a specific merge request.

• get_merge_request_comments Retrieve comments on a specific merge request, including discussion notes and code diff annotations.

• add_merge_request_comment Add a general comment on a specific merge request.

• add_merge_request_diff_comment Add an annotation to a merge request on a specific line in a particular file.

• get_merge_request_diff Obtain the code diff of a merge request.

• get_issue_details Get detailed information about a specific issue.

🔧 Technical Details

🔍 Running the Inspector

Set environment variables:

export MR_MCP_GITLAB_TOKEN=your_gitlab_token
export MR_MCP_GITLAB_HOST=your_gitlab_host

When used with an MCP client, you can run:

npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/inspector npm start

Troubleshooting

If you encounter permission issues (403 Forbidden), please check:

1. Your GitLab token has the appropriate scopes (api, read_api).
2. The token user has appropriate access to the project.
3. The project ID is correct.
