A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that enables full GitHub CLI integration. This server implements all the major functions of the GitHub CLI, allowing AI assistants to interact with GitHub repositories, issues, pull requests, files, etc.

📦 Installation

Download the Binary

Download the pre - compiled binary suitable for your system from the Releases page.

Build from Source

# Clone the repository
git clone https://github.com/your-username/github-mcp-server-go.git
cd github-mcp-server-go

# Build the binary
go build -o github-mcp-server

# Move the binary to a directory in your PATH (optional)
sudo mv github-mcp-server /usr/local/bin/

💻 Usage Examples

GitHub Personal Access Token

Before using the GitHub MCP server, you need a GitHub personal access token with appropriate permissions:

1. Visit GitHub Settings > Developer Settings > Personal Access Tokens.
2. Create a new token with the repo scope (for full repository access) or public_repo (for public repository access only).
3. Copy the generated token for use with the MCP server.

Run the Server

You can run the GitHub MCP server in two ways:

# Run with a token provided via command - line flag
./github-mcp-server --token your_token_here

# Or run with the token specified in an environment variable
export GITHUB_TOKEN=your_token_here
./github-mcp-server

Integration with Claude Desktop

To use the GitHub MCP server in Claude Desktop, follow these steps:

1. Open the ~/.config/claude/config.json file.
2. Add or modify the following content under the "modelContextProtocol" tag:

   "githubMcpServer": {
     "url": "http://localhost:1337",
     "token": "your_github_token_here"
   }
   

3. Save the file and restart Claude Desktop.

Tool Support

The GitHub MCP server implements the following tools:

• GitHub Repositories:
  • get_repository: Get repository information.
  • list_repositories: List all of a user's repositories.
  • create_repository: Create a new repository.
• Issues:
  • get_issue: Get information about a specific issue.
  • list_issues: List all issues in a repository.
  • create_issue: Create a new issue.
• Pull Requests:
  • get_pull_request: Get information about a specific pull request.
  • list_pull_requests: List all pull requests in a repository.
  • create_pull_request: Create a new pull request.
• Files:
  • get_file: Get the content of a file at a specific path in a repository.
  • list_files: List all files in a specified path in a repository.

Basic Usage

# Get repository information
claude --mcp-server http://localhost:1337 get_repository microsoft/vscode

# Create a new issue
claude --mcp-server http://localhost:1337 create_issue microsoft/vscode "New feature request" "Please add support for Markdown."

🔧 Security Considerations

• Ensure the security of your GitHub token and do not share it with untrusted third - parties.
• By default, the GitHub MCP server runs locally and binds to localhost, so it is not exposed to the external network.
