🚀 Anki MCP Server

An implemented MCP server that connects to the locally running Anki, providing card review and creation features.

This server is specifically designed for the Anki desktop application and the Anki-Connect plugin.

🚀 Quick Start

Resources

• anki://search/deckcurrent
  • Returns all cards in the current deck.
  • Equivalent to deck:current in Anki.
• anki://search/isdue
  • Returns cards waiting to be learned and reviewed.
  • Equivalent to is:due in Anki.
• anki://search/isnew
  • Returns all unseen cards.
  • Equivalent to is:new in Anki.

Tools

• update_cards

  • Marks the cards with the specified card IDs as answered and provides a difficulty level between 1 (Again) and 4 (Easy).
  • Input:
    • answers (array): An array of objects containing cardId (number) and ease (number) fields.

• add_card

  • Creates a new card in the default Anki deck.
  • Input:
    • front (string): The front of the card.
    • back (string): The back of the card.

Prompt

• high_quality_cards_prompt
  • A prompt containing guidelines for creating high-quality cards.
  • Based on Andy Matuschak's How to Write Good Prompts.

📦 Installation

Development

Install dependencies:

npm install

Build the server:

npm run build

Develop with automatic rebuild:

npm run watch

To use with Claude Desktop, add the following configuration:

Debugging

Since the MCP server communicates via stdio, debugging can be challenging. We recommend using MCP Inspector, which is available as a package script:

npm run inspector

The Inspector will provide a URL to access the debugging tools in the browser.
