This server enables users to directly use the GRID API from Claude for Desktop, facilitating seamless interaction with spreadsheets through Claude.

📦 Installation

⚠️ Important Note

There are some prerequisites for running this server:

• Install Claude for Desktop, Node.js, and Git.
• Register for GRID, upload a spreadsheet, and save a copy of your API key.

1. Clone this repository:

git clone https://github.com/GRID-is/claude-mcp.git

2. After cloning, navigate to the new directory:

cd claude-mcp

3. Next, set up the project using npm:

npm install

4. Now, we need to configure Claude for Desktop to use this MCP server. To do this, open the Claude application configuration file (create it if it doesn't exist). On MacOS:

~/Library/Application\ Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

On Windows:

%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json

5. Add your server under the mcpServers key:

Please ensure to change /ABSOLUTE/PATH/TO/claude-mcp to the actual path of the repository directory and replace YOUR_API_KEY with your GRID API key.

6. Quit Claude for Desktop and reopen it. Now you can ask Claude questions about the spreadsheet:

Use the workbook with id xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx and give me the sum of cells A1:C10.

💻 Usage Examples

Basic Usage

After following the installation steps, you can directly ask Claude questions about the spreadsheet in the Claude for Desktop application. For example:

Use the workbook with id xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx and give me the sum of cells A1:C10.

🔧 Technical Details

Development

If you want to modify the server code locally:

1. Install the dependencies:

npm install

2. Build the server:

npm run build

3. Develop with automatic rebuild:

npm run watch

Debugging

Since the MCP server communicates via stdio, debugging can be challenging. It is recommended to use MCP Inspector, which is available as a package script:

npm run inspector

MCP Inspector provides a URL to access debugging tools in your browser.
