📦 Installation

Manual Installation

Add the following content to your Claude Desktop configuration:

• macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
• Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json

Replace /path/to/your/vault with the absolute path of your Obsidian note library. For example:

macOS/Linux:

"/Users/username/Documents/MyVault"

Windows:

"C:\\Users\\username\\Documents\\MyVault"

Restart Claude after saving the configuration, and you should see a hammer icon appear, indicating that the server is connected.

If you encounter connection issues, check the logs:

• macOS: ~/Library/Logs/Claude/mcp*.log
• Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\logs\mcp*.log

Installation via Smithery

Note: I am not affiliated with Smithery. I have not tested using it and recommend users to install manually if possible.

To automatically install Obsidian for Claude Desktop via Smithery:

npx -y @smithery/cli install obsidian-mcp --client claude

🔧 Technical Details

Requirements

• Node.js 20 or higher (may work on lower versions, but not tested)
• Obsidian note library

Development

# Clone the repository

cd obsidian-mcp

# Install dependencies
npm install

# Build
npm run build

Then add the following content to your Claude Desktop configuration:

Available Tools

• obsidian-mcp start: Start the MCP server
• obsidian-mcp stop: Stop the MCP server
• obsidian-mcp status: Check the status of the MCP server

⚠️ Important Note

This MCP has read and write permissions (if you allow). Please back up your Obsidian note library before using obsidian-mcp to manage notes. I recommend using git, but any backup method will do. These tools have been tested but not thoroughly, and this MCP is under active development.
