What is GenAIScript? 🤖

GenAIScript is a framework that enables you to communicate with AI models, including local ones. GenAIScript can utilize MCP tools and also operate as an MCP server.

Model Context Protocol (MCP) 📋

Here's how the creators of Anthropic define the Model Context Protocol:

MCP is an open protocol that standardizes the way applications provide context to LLMs. Imagine MCP as the USB-C port for AI applications. Just as USB-C offers a universal interface for your devices to connect to various peripherals and accessories, MCP provides a standard way for AI models to connect with different data sources and tools.

📦 Installation

Install the VSCode extension. You need at least Node.js v20. For additional installation instructions, refer to [https://microsoft.github.io/genaiscript/getting-started/installation/](additional instructions).

💻 Usage Examples

Basic Usage

If you have installed the March 2025 version of VSCode Insiders, you should be able to run the GenAIScript MCP server locally to obtain the tool version on your local machine.

mcp.json is where you configure the MCP server. Here is an example configuration for Windows. When using this method, you don't even need to clone this repository because GenAIScript can install the tools for you in the background. If you use the --remote flag, you don't need to install the GenAIScript extension.

You can click the "Start" link to start the MCP server. If the server is already running, you'll see a "Running" indicator.
