🚀 Weather MCP Server

A simple MCP (Model Control Protocol) server that uses the National Weather Service API to provide weather information. This server offers two tools:

• get_alerts: Retrieve weather alerts for a U.S. state.
• get_forecast: Obtain the weather forecast for a specific location.

🚀 Quick Start

Prerequisites

• Python 3.10 or higher.
• uv package manager (recommended) or pip.

📦 Installation

1. Clone this repository:

git clone <your-repo-url>
cd simple_mcp_server

2. Configure your Python environment: Using uv (recommended):

# Install uv if not already installed
curl -LsSf https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh

# Create and activate a virtual environment
uv venv
source .venv/bin/activate  # Use .venv\Scripts\activate on Windows

# Install dependencies
uv add "mcp[cli]" httpx

Or using pip:

python -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate  # Use .venv\Scripts\activate on Windows
pip install "mcp[cli]" httpx

💻 Usage Examples

Basic Usage

1. Run the server:

mcp dev main.py

2. Configure Claude for Desktop:
   • Open your Claude for Desktop application configuration file located at ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json.
   • Add the following configuration:

   • Replace /ABSOLUTE/PATH/TO/simple_mcp_server with the full path to your actual project.
   • Save the file and restart Claude for Desktop.
3. Test the server:
   • Open Claude for Desktop.
   • Find the hammer icon in the interface.
   • You should see two tools: get_alerts and get_forecast.
   • Try asking the following questions:
     • "What's the weather like in NY?"
     • "What active weather alerts are there in NY?"

Available Tools

get_alerts

Retrieve weather alerts for a U.S. state. Parameters:

• state (str): Two-letter U.S. state code (e.g., 'CA', 'NY').

get_forecast

Obtain the weather forecast for a specific location. Parameters:

• latitude (float): Latitude of the location.
• longitude (float): Longitude of the location.

Troubleshooting

1. If the server is not detected by Claude for Desktop:
   • Ensure the configuration file path is correct.
   • Verify that the absolute path in the configuration is correct.
   • Confirm that all dependencies are installed.
   • Try restarting Claude for Desktop.
2. If there are weather API errors:
   • Check your internet connection.
   • Verify that the coordinates or state code are valid.
   • Note that the National Weather Service API is only applicable to U.S. regions.
