🚀 MCP Geocoder Rosetta Project

The MCP Geocoder Rosetta Project aims to provide a unified interface for MCP (Machine Control Protocol) geocoding tools implemented in different programming languages and using various geocoding services. Currently, it supports the following three implementations:

1. Python implementation based on urllib: Directly calls the Google Maps Geocoding API.
2. Python implementation based on Google Maps SDK: Interacts using the Python library provided by Google.
3. TypeScript implementation: Runs on the Node.js platform and also calls the Google Maps Geocoding API.

📦 Installation

Clone the repository

git clone git@github.com:yourusername/mcp-geocoder-rosetta.git
cd mcp-geocoder-rosetta

Install dependencies

For the Python implementation:

pip install googlemaps

For the TypeScript implementation:

npm install typescript @types/node @googlemaps/google-maps-services-js --save

Configure environment variables

Create a .env file in the root directory of the project and add the following content:

GOOGLE_MAPS_API_KEY=your-api-key

💻 Usage Examples

Python implementation based on urllib

uv run --with mcp[cli] mcp run path/to/python-urllib/geocoder.py

Python implementation based on Google Maps SDK

uv run --with mcp[cli] --with googlemaps mcp run path/to/python-googlemaps/gecoder.py

TypeScript implementation

npx tsx path/to/typescript/googlemaps/gecoder.ts

Important Notes

⚠️ Important Note

Install only one geocoding implementation at a time to avoid tool ambiguity issues.

💡 Usage Tip

• Use absolute paths when configuring MCP tools.
• Ensure the JSON configuration format is correct (no trailing commas, proper indentation).

Temporary Directory Explanation

The repository contains multiple temp/ directories for dynamically generating test and debugging scripts:

• /temp/: Root temporary directory for main test scripts.
• python-urllib/temp/: For testing scripts of the urllib implementation.
• python-googlemaps/temp/: For testing scripts of the Google Maps API implementation.
• typescript-googlemaps/temp/: For TypeScript testing tools.

These directories have been added to .gitignore, so do not commit them to the repository.

Known Issues

• Interactive input performs poorly in non-interactive environments (e.g., Claude Code).
• There may be differences in performance and reliability among different implementations.
• The old MCP client implementation (mcp-client/) is deprecated and no longer maintained.
