This guide provides a comprehensive overview of the Box MCP Server, including developer token authorization, Claude Desktop configuration, available features, and steps to set up the development environment.

🚀 Quick Start

Developer Token Authorization

Currently, this MCP server only supports authentication via developer tokens.

To get started, set the BOX_DEV_TOKEN to your Box developer token.

First, visit the Box Developer Console and create a new application. The authorization type doesn't matter at this stage, as all applications supporting Box developer tokens can be used.

Once your application is created, navigate to its configuration settings and click Generate Developer Token.

📦 Installation

Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure you have installed the following:

• Node.js (v22 or higher)
• npm
• git

Setting Up the Development Environment

To set up the development environment, follow these steps:

1. Fork the repository

   • Click the "Fork" button in the upper right corner of this repository.
   • This will create a copy of the repository under your GitHub account.

2. Clone your fork:

   git clone https://github.com/YOUR_USERNAME/box-mcp-server.git
   cd box-mcp-server
   

3. Add the upstream remote:

   git remote add upstream https://github.com/hmk/box-mcp-server.git
   

4. Install dependencies:

   npm install
   

5. Set the BOX_DEV_TOKEN environment variable:

   export BOX_DEV_TOKEN=your_developer_token
   

6. Run the watcher to keep index.js updated:

   npm run watch
   

7. Start the Model Context Protocol development server:

   npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector node PATH_TO_YOUR_CLONED_REPO/dist/index.js
   

8. If the development server fails to load environment variables correctly, set BOX_DEV_TOKEN on the left side of the MCP Inspector.
