A weather service application built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), providing access to real-time weather data and alerts.

🚀 Quick Start

Prerequisites

• Node.js (v18 or higher)
• npm or yarn package manager

Installation Steps

# Clone the repository
git clone https://github.com/cskiro/MCP-Weather-Server.git

# Navigate to the project directory
cd MCP-Weather-Server

# Install dependencies
npm install

# Build the project
npm run build

# Make the CLI tool executable
chmod +x build/index.js

# Install globally (optional)
npm install -g .

Usage

There are two ways to use this server:

1. Direct Call:

weather

2. Through an MCP-compatible client/assistant: Configure your MCP client to use the weather tools for forecast and weather alert queries.

Overview

The MCP Weather Server is a backend application written in TypeScript. It serves as the foundation for weather-related applications and provides services using the MCP SDK. It offers users current weather conditions, forecasts, and weather alert information from the National Weather Service (NWS) API.

Architecture

The application is built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP) framework:

1. MCP Server Layer: Responsible for communication with MCP clients.
2. Weather Tools: Implement forecast and alert functionality modules.
3. External API Integration: Connects to the National Weather Service (NWS) API.

Component Structure

The server includes two main weather tools:

• get-forecast: Retrieves detailed weather forecasts for a specified location based on latitude and longitude parameters.
• get-alerts: Retrieves active weather alerts within a specified area based on the state name parameter. These tools interact with the National Weather Service API to provide reliable data support.

🔧 Technical Details

The application uses Node.js and TypeScript to build a backend server. It integrates with the MCP SDK to communicate with MCP clients and uses the National Weather Service API as the data source. Zod is used for input validation to ensure the accuracy of user input. The server consists of an MCP server layer, weather tools, and external API integration components, which work together to provide weather forecast and alert services.

📦 Data Source

This server uses the National Weather Service API, which provides official weather information for the United States. Due to data source limitations, currently, only location queries within the United States are supported.
