💻 Usage Examples

Basic Usage

Stdio Mode

# Set the GitHub token via an environment variable
export GITHUB_TOKEN=your_github_token

# Start the server (default is stdio mode)
github-mcp

# Or explicitly specify stdio mode
github-mcp -t stdio

SSE Mode

# Set the GitHub token via an environment variable (or specify it in the Authorization header of each request)
export GITHUB_TOKEN=your_github_token

# Start the SSE server on the default port (8080)
github-mcp -t sse

# Start the SSE server using a custom port
github-mcp -t sse -p 3000

In SSE mode, you can also include the GitHub token in the Authorization header of an HTTP request:

curl -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_GITHUB_TOKEN" http://localhost:8080/events

Advanced Usage

Docker Container Usage

A Docker container is provided to run the server in SSE mode.

Building the Docker Image

# Build the Docker image
docker build -t github-mcp-server-sse .

Running the Docker Container

# Set the environment variable for the GitHub token and run the container
docker run -p 8080:8080 -e GITHUB_TOKEN=your_github_token github-mcp-server-sse

# Run with a custom port (specified via an environment variable)
docker run -p 3000:3000 -e GITHUB_TOKEN=your_github_token -e PORT=3000 github-mcp-server-sse
