🚀 Superargs: Update MCP Server Parameters via Chat

Superargs enables you to set parameters for MCP servers at runtime. Instead of configuring them during the initial setup, you can provide parameters for any MCP server while interacting with the assistant. Whether it's an authentication token, an environment variable, or other CLI parameters, Superargs makes it easy to provide them at runtime.

Superargs is supported by superinterface.ai, supermachine.ai, and supercorp.ai.

📦 Installation

Run Superargs via npx:

npx -y superargs --stdio "npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-postgres {{databaseUrl}}"

• --stdio: Run a shell command for a stdio MCP server and replace runtime parameters in the form of {{argName}}.
• --update-args-tool-name: (Optional) Customize the tool name for updating/restarting parameters. The default is update_args.

Basic Usage

The parameters in the --stdio command are represented by {{argName}}. For example:

npx -y superargs --stdio "GITHUB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN={{githubToken}} npx -y @modelcontextprotocol/server-github"

In this command:

• {{githubToken}} is a parameter set at runtime using the update_args tool (or a custom tool name if specified).

Advanced Usage

After running the command, here's what happens:

• Initial State: At startup, the MCP server has no parameters.
  • If the underlying stdio MCP server can start without parameters, it will try to start without them to provide a list of tools and other MCP server functions. If it can work without parameters, the only difference is the addition of an update_args tool to update the parameters.
  • If the server requires parameters to start, it won't start until the parameters are set, and all other MCP server functions except the update_args tool are unavailable.
• update_args Tool: You can use this tool to interact after the parameters are successfully passed.

Example 1

Replace {{githubToken}} with an actual GitHub token:

npx -y superargs --stdio "GITHUB_PERSONAL_ACCESS_TOKEN=your_github_token_here"

This allows you to provide a GitHub token at runtime so that the MCP server can use it to perform authenticated operations.

Example 2

Configure PostgreSQL database access:

npx -y superargs --stdio "DB_USER=root DB_PASSWORD=password DB_HOST=localhost DB_PORT=5432"

This allows you to provide database credentials at runtime so that the MCP server can connect to the specified PostgreSQL instance.

Superargs works by injecting the required parameters at runtime. These parameters can be of any type, including strings, numbers, or booleans, and can be passed via the command line or read from environment variables.
