Let's set up a remote MCP server on Cloudflare Workers and integrate OAuth login functionality!

🚀 Quick Start

💻 Local Development

# Clone the repository
git clone git@github.com:cloudflare/ai.git

# Navigate to the example directory
cd ai/demos/remote-mcp-server

# Install dependencies
npm install

# Run locally
npm run dev

You should be able to open http://localhost:8787/ in your browser.

📦 Connect the MCP Inspector to Your Server

To explore the new MCP API, you can use the MCP Inspector.

• Start it using npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector.
• In the inspector, switch the transport type to SSE, enter http://localhost:8787/sse in the URL, and click "Connect".
• You'll enter a (simulated) user login screen. Enter any email and password to log in.
• After successful login, you should be redirected back to the MCP inspector and be able to list and call any defined tools!

💻 Connect Claude Desktop to Your Local MCP Server

The MCP inspector is great, but what we really want is to integrate it with Claude! Follow the Anthropic's Quick Start Guide, go to "Settings" > "Developer" > "Edit Configuration" in Claude Desktop, and find your configuration file.

Open the file in a text editor and replace it with the following content:

This will run a local proxy that allows Claude to communicate with your MCP server over HTTP.

After opening Claude, the browser window should display the login screen. You should be able to see the list of available tools. As prompted, Claude may request to call a tool.

🚀 Deployment to Cloudflare

1. npx wrangler@latest kv namespace create remote-mcp-server-oauth-kv
2. Follow the guide to add the kv namespace ID to the wrangler.jsonc file.
3. npm run deploy

📦 Call Your Newly Deployed Remote MCP Server from a Remote MCP Client

Just as you did in the "Local Development" section, run the MCP inspector: npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector@latest

Then enter your Worker's workers.dev URL (e.g., worker-name.account-name.workers.dev/sse) in the inspector and click "Connect".

You have successfully connected the MCP server to the remote MCP client.
