🚀 MCP SDK Project Setup

This project provides a step - by - step guide to set up the environment and run the MCP SDK project. It mainly focuses on the necessary software installations and running tests on macOS.

Prerequisites

⚠️ Important Note

This setup has only been tested on macOS.

Homebrew

Install Homebrew using these instructions.

Python

Any Python version equal to or higher than Python 3.10 should work. Install it as follows:

brew install python

Also, install the Python package manager uv according to the official instructions.

npx

We also need npx. We can obtain it using the Node package manager npm. Install the Node.js version manager nvm using these instructions. Then install Node.js and npm. We choose version 22 "Jod" (LTS).

nvm install lts/jod

This will provide you with Node.js, npm, and npx simultaneously. You can verify the installation of npx by running the following command:

npx --version

📦 Installation

In the root directory of the project, run the following command:

uv sync

💻 Usage Examples

Running and Testing the Server

The MCP SDK is part of the project dependencies, so we can use the MCP Inspector tool. In the root directory of the project, run:

uv run mcp dev server.py

It will output a message like:

MCP Inspector is running and ready at http://127.0.0.1:{somePort}

Click on the link to open it in the browser to view the MCP Inspector. For the Transport Type, select STDIO. Click Connect. If successful, you will see the inspector view populated with content.
