A C# application serving as a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, providing context information about .NET project dependencies (NuGet packages) for large language models (LLMs) or other development tools.

🚀 Quick Start

This server analyzes .NET solution (.sln) and project (.csproj) files to extract NuGet package information. It interacts with NuGet feeds to obtain package details, versions, and metadata, and uses SQLite for local caching to improve performance. These features are exposed as tools through the MCP protocol, allowing AI agents or other tools to programmatically query NuGet information.

The server provides the following tools through MCP:

• AnalyzeProjectDependencies: Analyze .sln or .csproj files to find NuGet dependencies and their latest available versions.
• SearchNuGetPackages: Search for packages matching a given search term in the configured NuGet feeds, supporting pagination and the option to include pre-release versions.
• GetNuGetPackageVersions: List all available versions (stable or pre-release) of a specific package ID.
• GetLatestNuGetPackageVersion: Get the latest stable or pre-release version string of a specific package ID.
• GetNuGetPackageDetails: Retrieve detailed metadata (description, author, URL, etc.) for a specific package ID and its optional version.

📦 Installation

Prerequisites

• .NET 9 SDK (or a compatible version)

Steps

1. Clone the repository:

git clone https://github.com/plucked/nuget-context-server.git
cd nuget-context-server

2. Install dependencies: Run the following command in the project root directory to install all dependencies:

dotnet restore

3. Build the project: Build the solution using the following command:

dotnet build

Configuration

The project's configuration is located in the appsettings.json file and includes the following settings:

• MCP Transport: Specify the transport method for communicating with clients (e.g., stdio or http).
• Logging: Configure the logging provider and log level.

🔧 Technical Details

The server uses a layered architecture built on the .NET Generic Host:

• Host: Manages the application lifecycle, dependency injection (DI), configuration, logging, and MCP communication settings.
• App: Defines service interfaces and contains the core application logic and MCP tool definitions.
• Infrastructure: Provides specific implementations:
  • NuGet feed interaction (NuGet.Protocol).
  • Project/solution parsing (Microsoft.Build).
  • Caching (Microsoft.Data.Sqlite).
