🚀 Ruby MCP Example

This project requires Ruby 3.3 or a higher version.

A simple Ruby MCP (Model Context Protocol) server implementation using the mcp-rb gem.

🚀 Quick Start

📦 Installation

1. Make sure you have Ruby installed.
2. Install the required gem:

gem install mcp-rb

Or use a Gemfile:

bundle install

💻 Running the Server

You can run the MCP server directly:

ruby ruby_mcp_app.rb

Running as a Persistent Service

To make the MCP server available to Cursor and other clients, it needs to stay running. You have three options:

1. Let Cursor start it automatically: Cursor will try to start the server when needed according to the mcp.json configuration.

2. Run it manually in a separate terminal window:

   # In a dedicated terminal window
   cd /Users/steveodom/Documents/Projects/mcp-ruby
   ruby ruby_mcp_app.rb
   

   Keep this terminal open to keep the server running.

3. Run it as a background process:

   # Start in the background
   cd /Users/steveodom/Documents/Projects/mcp-ruby
   nohup ruby ruby_mcp_app.rb > mcp_server.log 2>&1 &
   
   # Record the process ID
   echo $! > mcp_server.pid
   
   # Stop it later
   kill $(cat mcp_server.pid)
   

💻 Testing with a Client

There is a test client included to demonstrate how to interact with the MCP server:

ruby test_client.rb

📚 Cursor Integration

The server is configured in your Cursor's MCP configuration file:

Greet Tool

Greet someone by name:

Calculate Tool

Perform basic arithmetic operations:

🔧 Extending the Server

To add new tools or resources, edit the ruby_mcp_app.rb file:

🐞 Debugging

If you encounter any issues, please check:

• The correct paths in your MCP configuration.
• That the gem is installed correctly.
• The tool parameter types (e.g., Float vs Integer).
• The server running status: Make sure the MCP server is actually running.
• Check the debug log file /Users/steveodom/Documents/Projects/mcp-ruby/mcp_app.log
