A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides the VSCode environment context and file system operations for AI assistants.

The VSCode Context MCP builds a bridge between AI assistants and the VSCode environment. It enables AI models to:

1. Access the current VSCode context (active files, tabs, terminal output).
2. Perform controlled file system operations.
3. Execute shell commands in a controlled environment.

This allows AI assistants to offer more relevant and context-aware assistance for software development tasks.

Be careful about what you let this server run! In the Claude Desktop app, use Approve Once (instead of Allow for This Chat) so that you can review each command, and use Deny if you don't trust the command. Permissions are determined by the user running the server.

This tool has not implemented comprehensive security measures, so please use it with caution.

Integration with AI Assistants

This MCP server is designed to work with AI assistants compatible with the Model Context Protocol. Here are the integration steps:

1. Install the VSCode Extension:
   • Open VSCode.
   • Go to the Extensions view (press Ctrl+Shift+X or select “View” > “Extensions” from the menu).
   • Search for and install the “VSCode Context MCP” extension.
2. Run the MCP Server:
   • After installation, open the terminal (press Ctrl+Alt+T).
   • Enter the command: npm start mcp-server.
   • Press Enter to start the service.
3. Configure the AI Assistant:
   • In your AI assistant settings, specify the address and port of the MCP server.
   • Ensure that the API key or authentication token is correctly configured to access the service.

• create_directory: Create a new directory structure.
• search_files: Search for files that match a specific pattern.
• edit_file: Modify files line by line.
• write_file: Create or overwrite file contents.
• move_file: Move or rename files and directories.
• directory_tree: Get the recursive structure information of a directory.

Development Plan

1. Support multiple VSCode projects.
2. Add confirmation/undo functions for file writing/editing.
3. Redesign the user interface.
