Word MCP Server

🚀 MCP Server for Microsoft Word Editing

This server offers tools to interact with Microsoft Word (.docx) files and accurately convert them into PDF format.

This is a TypeScript-based MCP server that demonstrates core MCP concepts, including:

• Tools for reading, modifying, and deleting Word files.
• Tools for converting Word files to PDF while preserving all formats.
• All file and folder operations can now directly use absolute or relative paths (relative to the current working directory of the process). The concept of a pre - selected working folder no longer exists.

Word Tools

list_files_in_folder

• Purpose: List files in a specified folder.
• Parameters: folderPath (optional, absolute or relative path to the folder; if not provided, the current working directory is used by default).

read_word_content

• Purpose: Read the text content of a Word (.docx) file.
• Parameters: filePath (absolute or relative path to the .docx file).

replace_word_words

• Purpose: Replace words in a Word (.docx) file and save it as a new file.
• Parameters:
  • filePath (absolute or relative path to the input file).
  • outputFilePath (absolute or relative path to the output file).
  • replacements (an array of {from, to}).

delete_word_file

• Purpose: Delete a Word (.docx) file.
• Parameters: filePath (absolute or relative path to the .docx file).

word_to_pdf

• Purpose: Convert a Word (.docx) file to PDF, preserving all formats and images. Requires LibreOffice to be installed.
• Parameters:
  • filePath (absolute or relative path to the input .docx file).
  • outputFilePath (absolute or relative path to the output .pdf file).
• Note: This feature uses LibreOffice in headless mode for professional - grade conversion. If LibreOffice is not installed, refer to the installation section below.

📦 Installation

Install Node.js dependencies:

npm install

Install LibreOffice (for Word → PDF conversion):

npm run install-libreoffice

Compile the server:

npm run build

Use the development environment with auto - rebuild:

npm run watch

💻 Usage with Claude Desktop

Add the configuration at the following paths:

On MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json On Windows: %APPDATA%/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

🔧 Debugging

Since the MCP server communicates via stdio, debugging can be challenging. We recommend using MCP Inspector, which is available as a package script:

npm run inspector

The Inspector will provide a URL that can be accessed in a browser to get debugging tools.
