This guide instructs you on setting up a Claude-compatible MCP server on Windows and macOS/Linux using Python, FastMCP, and uv.

📦 Installation

Prerequisites

• Python ≥ 3.12 (required by mcp-example)
• uv installed
• Terminal (Command Prompt, PowerShell, or Bash)

Install the mcp Package Using uv

Run the following command in the terminal:

uv add "mcp[cli]"

Installing Claude is Mandatory

💻 Usage Examples

Step 1: Create Your MCP Server (main.py)

Create a file named main.py in the project folder:

# Create the MCP server
mcp = FastMCP("Demo")

# Add a simple tool
@mcp.tool()
def add(a: int, b: int) -> int:

# Add a dynamic greeting resource
@mcp.resource("greeting://{name}")
def get_greeting(name: str) -> str:
    """Return a personalized greeting"""
    return f"Hello, {name}!"

Step 2: Install uv

Windows

1. Open PowerShell as an administrator.
2. Run:

irm https://astral.sh/uv/install.ps1 | iex

This installs uv to %USERPROFILE%\.cargo\bin\uv.

Optional: If you need to manually add it to the PATH, run:

$env:Path += ";$HOME\.cargo\bin"

Then close and reopen the terminal.

macOS / Linux

Run the following command in the terminal:

curl -Ls https://astral.sh/uv/install.sh | sh

If you need to add it to the shell's configuration file, run:

export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"

Test it:

uv --version

✅ If you see the version number, the installation is successful.

Step 3: Start Your MCP Server

Now register and run the Claude-compatible server:

uv run mcp install main.py

This command will:

• Dynamically install mcp[cli] using uv.
• Validate your main.py server.
• Register it for use with Claude (if integrated).

Step 4 (Optional): Manual Testing

To verify if it's working properly, run the following command:

uv run main.py

Then in another terminal, you can test the tools and resources:

curl http://localhost:1234/_/add?tool=add\&a=1\&b=2
curl http://localhost:1234/_/greeting?resource=greeting%3A%2F%2Ftest

Troubleshooting

Error Message: spawn uv ENOENT

• Cause: uv is not installed or not configured correctly.
• Solution: Reinstall and configure uv according to the uv Installation Guide.
