Simplify the installation and restart process of Claude Desktop on Mac using the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

🚀 Quick Start

Installing Claude Desktop on a Mac using the Model Context Protocol (MCP) can be a bit cumbersome. The mcp-installer simplifies this process, allowing you to use the MCP protocol to have Claude assist in installing MCP tools.

Once these tools are installed, you still need to restart Claude Desktop for the changes to take effect... That's where mcp-server-restart comes in!

The mcp-server-restart package provides an MCP server for restarting the Claude Desktop application on Mac.

Basic Usage

Tell Claude Desktop “Restart Claude”, and it will restart the application.

Resources

The server provides a status resource:

• claude://status - Returns the current status of Claude Desktop
  • Returns a JSON containing the running status, PID, and timestamp
  • MIME type: application/json

Tools

The server implements a tool:

• restart_claude - Restarts the Claude Desktop application
  • Safely terminates the existing process (if running)
  • Launches a new instance
  • Provides progress notifications during the restart

📦 Installation

Installation requires editing the Claude Desktop configuration file on MacOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

Option 1: Install both mcp-installer and mcp-server-restart packages: Add the following to your Claude Desktop configuration file:
