🚀 Upstash MCP Server

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is a new standardized protocol for managing context between Large Language Models (LLMs) and external systems. In this repository, we provide an installer and an MCP server for the Upstash Developer API.

This allows you to use Claude Desktop or any MCP client to perform various operations on your Upstash account using natural language, such as:

• "Create a new Redis database in the us-east-1 region"
• "List all databases"
• "View keys in user databases starting with 'user:'"
• "Create a backup"
• "Give me the throughput peaks for the past 7 days"

🚀 Quick Start

Prerequisites

• Node.js >= v18.0.0
• Claude Desktop
• Upstash API Key - You can create one here.

Usage Locally

1. Run npx @upstash/mcp-server-upstash init <UPSTASH_EMAIL> <UPSTASH_API_KEY>
2. Restart Claude Desktop
3. Now you should be able to use Upstash commands in Claude Desktop

⚠️ Important Note

If you are using a node version management tool such as nvm or fnm, please refer to this issue (here). You should change the node command in the MCP configuration to the absolute path of the node binary.

Development

Basic Usage

# Clone the project and install dependencies
bun install
# Continuously build the project and watch for changes
npm run watch

To test, create a .env file in the same directory as the project directory with the following content:

UPSTASH_EMAIL=<UPSTASH_EMAIL>
UPSTASH_API_KEY=<UPSTASH_API_KEY>

This will be used to set up the Claude configuration and run the MCP inspector.

Advanced Usage

# Install the Claude Desktop configuration for local development
npm run setup

This will add an upstash entry to your MCP configuration file, pointing to the local version of your built package.

⚠️ Important Note

The same issue applies to node version management tools here. Please check the note in the Usage section.

You can now run Upstash commands using Claude Desktop.

To view the MCP server logs in real-time, run the following command:

npm run logs

You can also use the MCP inspector for testing:

npm run inspector
