📦 Installation

1. Clone this repository:

2. Set up the environment using uv:

# If uv is not installed, install it first
# pip install uv

# Create and activate a virtual environment
uv venv
source .venv/bin/activate  # On Windows: .venv\Scripts\activate

# Install dependencies
uv pip install -r requirements.txt

3. Build the parsers:

uv run build_parsers.py

💻 Usage Examples

Using with Claude Desktop

1. Configure Claude Desktop to use this server. The easiest way is to use the provided claude_desktop_config.json file:

2. Make sure to replace /absolute/path/to/ast-mcp-server with the actual absolute path on your system.
3. Add this configuration to your Claude Desktop configuration:
   • On macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/claude-desktop/claude_desktop_config.json
   • On Linux: ~/.config/claude-desktop/claude_desktop_config.json
   • On Windows: %APPDATA%\claude-desktop\claude_desktop_config.json%
4. Restart Claude Desktop to load the new MCP server.
5. In Claude Desktop, you can now use the AST-based code analysis tools.

Explanation of Installation Steps

To install the AST MCP server, follow these steps:

1. Clone the repository to your local development environment.
2. Use the Python virtual environment management tool uv to create and activate a virtual environment.

4. Run the build script to initialize all supported programming language parsers.

How It Works

The AST MCP server connects to Claude Desktop through the Model Context Protocol (MCP). When starting:

1. Service Initialization: Claude Desktop starts the server using uv run and specifies the working directory.
2. Load Parser Modules: The server loads the tree-sitter language modules to support parsing of multiple programming languages.
3. Register Tools and Resources: All tools and resources are registered to the MCP protocol.
4. Analysis Execution: Claude can call these tools through the MCP protocol to analyze the code shared by the user.
