🚀 MCP YouTube Server

This is a simple Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides tools for interacting with YouTube. It enables MCP host applications (such as the desktop version of Claude) to perform the following operations:

• Search for YouTube videos.
• Retrieve detailed information about specific YouTube videos.

📦 Installation

• Python 3.10 or higher: Required for running the server.
• uv: Must be installed before running the setup.
• YouTube Data API v3 Key: You can obtain one from the Google Cloud Console.
• Bash-compatible shell: Primarily used for running the setup script on Linux/macOS.

Steps

1. Clone the repository:

   git clone https://github.com/davo00019/mcp-server-youtube.git
   cd mcp-server-youtube
   

2. Run the setup script:

   • Ensure uv is installed (pip install uv or refer to uv installation).
   • Run the following command inside the mcp-server-youtube directory:

     bash setup.sh
     

   • The script will:
     • Check for uv.
     • Create a virtual environment (.venv) in mcp-server-youtube.
     • Install dependencies (uv sync).
     • Prompt you to enter your YouTube API key and create a .env file.
     • Make the server wrapper script executable.
     • Print the final instructions and the path required for MCP host configuration.

3. Configure the MCP host:

   • Follow the instructions printed at the end of the setup.sh script.
   • Copy the provided "wrapper script path".
   • Paste this path into the command field of your MCP host configuration file (e.g., claude_desktop_config.json), ensuring the args field is an empty list.

Basic Usage

The server provides several tools for interacting with YouTube:

• Search for videos: Find relevant videos by keywords.
• Get detailed information: Retrieve metadata for specific videos, such as titles and view counts.

Configuration Details (.env)

The setup.sh script will prompt you to enter your YouTube Data API v3 key and create an .env file with the following content:

YOUTUBE_API_KEY=YOUR_API_KEY_HERE

If you need to change the key, edit the .env file directly.

Using with MCP Host

• When configuring the server in the desktop version of Claude, you need to modify its configuration file. Refer to the script output for the specific path.
• Paste the wrapper script path correctly into the configuration file to ensure the tool can be called properly.
