What is TOOL4LM?
TOOL4LM is a tool server based on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), specifically designed to provide powerful external tool support for locally run language models (such as LM Studio, Ollama, etc.). It enables your local AI assistant to perform web searches, read web pages, process documents, query academic materials, and execute calculation tasks just like ChatGPT.How to use TOOL4LM?
Simply configure the MCP server in your local AI client (such as LM Studio), and TOOL4LM will automatically add a series of useful tools to your language model. After configuration, you can directly instruct the AI assistant to use these tools through natural language, such as 'Search for the latest AI news' or 'Calculate this mathematical expression'.Applicable scenarios
TOOL4LM is particularly suitable for scenarios where the capabilities of local AI assistants need to be enhanced, such as academic research, content creation, technical document processing, real-time information query, and data analysis. It enables local AI assistants to have the ability to search the Internet and process local documents, greatly expanding the scope of applications.Main Features
Intelligent Web Search
Supports multiple search engines (SearXNG + DuckDuckGo), automatically deduplicates search results, and returns titles, URLs, and content summaries. You can specify the language, website, and the number of results.
Web Page Content Extraction
Safely download web page content, extract readable text, support size and time limits, and prevent SSRF attacks. Suitable for content summarization and analysis.
Document Processing
Search for and read documents (supporting txt/md/html/pdf formats) in the specified sandbox directory. PDF files are parsed using the pdf-parse library and loaded on demand.
Academic Query
Integrates arXiv, Crossref, and Wikipedia to search for academic papers and materials. Supports obtaining detailed metadata through DOI or arXiv ID.
Advanced Calculator
Use the mathjs library to evaluate mathematical expressions, supporting precision control, scientific calculations, and complex operations.
Multi-Tool Integration
All tools are provided through a unified MCP interface, supporting tool aliases for easy invocation by different AI models.
Advantages
Completely free: No API key is required, and it can be used open-source and free of charge
Privacy protection: Data is processed locally to protect user privacy
Comprehensive functions: Integrates multiple tools such as search, document, academic, and calculation
Easy to integrate: Adheres to the standard MCP protocol and is compatible with mainstream local AI clients
Flexible configuration: Supports environment variable configuration to meet different needs
Limitations
Dependent on external services: The web search function depends on the availability of third-party search engines
Performance limitations: There may be performance impacts when processing large documents
Configuration requirements: Some technical knowledge is required for initial configuration
Function scope: Focuses on information retrieval and processing and does not include AI functions such as image generation
How to Use
Install Dependencies
Ensure that Node.js 18+ is installed on the system, and then clone or download the TOOL4LM project
Build the Project
Compile TypeScript code into JavaScript
Start the Server
Run the server and view the sandbox directory configuration
Configure the AI Client
Add the TOOL4LM server configuration to the mcp.json in clients such as LM Studio
Start Using
Restart the AI client, and now your AI assistant can use all the tools provided by TOOL4LM
Usage Examples
