Operating Modes

The server supports two operating modes:

• Safe Mode (--safe): Only allows read operations (GET requests). This is useful when you want to prevent any modifications to the Airflow instance.
• Unsafe Mode (--unsafe): Allows all operations, including modifications. This is the default mode.

To start in safe mode:

airflow-mcp-server --safe

To explicitly start in unsafe mode (although this is the default):

airflow-mcp-server --unsafe

Considerations

The MCP server expects the following environment variables to be configured:

• AIRFLOW_BASE_URL: The base URL of the Airflow API
• AUTH_TOKEN: Base64-encoded username:password for basic authentication (optional if COOKIE is provided)
• COOKIE: Session cookie for cookie-based authentication (optional if AUTH_TOKEN is provided)
• OPENAPI_SPEC: Path to the OpenAPI specification file (defaults to the latest stable version)

Authentication Methods The server supports two authentication methods:

• Basic Authentication: Using base64-encoded username:password via the AUTH_TOKEN environment variable
• Cookie-based Authentication: Using a session cookie via the COOKIE environment variable At least one authentication method must be provided.

Page Limit By default, 100 items are displayed, but you can change this setting by using the maximum_page_limit option in the [api] section of Airflow's airflow.cfg file.
