🚀 Web Research MCP Server

A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for web research. It brings real-time information into Claude and enables easy research on any topic.

🚀 Quick Start

Simply start a chat with Claude and send a prompt that can benefit from web research. If you want to use the pre-built in-depth web research prompt from this package, you can access it by clicking the paperclip icon in the Claude desktop, then selecting Choose an integration → webresearch → agentic-research.

📦 Installation

First, make sure you have downloaded and installed the Claude desktop application and have npm installed.

Next, add the following content to your claude_desktop_config.json (on Mac, the file is located at ~/Library/Application\ Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json):

This configuration allows the Claude desktop application to automatically start the web research MCP server when needed.

💻 Usage Examples

Basic Usage

The tools provided by this server are as follows:

1. search_google

   • Execute a Google search and extract the results.
   • Parameters: { query: string }

2. visit_page

   • Visit a web page and extract its content.
   • Parameters: { url: string, takeScreenshot?: boolean }

3. take_screenshot

   • Capture a screenshot of the current page.
   • No parameters required.

Advanced Usage

agentic-research

A guided research prompt to help Claude conduct thorough web research. This prompt instructs Claude to:

• Start with a broad search to understand the topic background.
• Prioritize high-quality, authoritative sources.
• Gradually refine the research direction based on the findings.
• Actively notify you and allow you to interactively guide the research.
• Always cite sources with URLs.

Resources

We expose two things through MCP resources: (1) Captured web page screenshots, (2) Research sessions.

Screenshots

When you capture a screenshot, it is saved as an MCP resource. You can access the captured screenshots by clicking the paperclip icon in the Claude desktop.

Research Sessions

The server maintains a research session, including:

• Search queries
• Visited pages
• Extracted content
• Screenshots
• Timestamps

Suggestions

For the best results, if you choose not to use the agentic-research prompt for research, it is recommended to prompt Claude to use high-quality sources when researching general topics. For example, you can prompt Claude: "Please cite from the following sources: [List of specified high-quality sources]".
