A custom implementation of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) that adds Perplexity AI as a tool provider for Claude Desktop.

📦 Installation

Prerequisites

• Node.js (v16 or higher)
• Claude Desktop (latest version)
• Perplexity API Key

Option 1: Clone and Run Locally

1. Clone this repository:

   git clone https://github.com/Family-IT-Guy/perplexity-mcp.git
   cd perplexity-mcp
   

2. Install dependencies:

   npm install
   

3. Create a .env file and add your API key:

   PERPLEXITY_API_KEY=your_api_key_here
   

4. Test the server:

   node server.js
   

Option 2: Global Installation

1. Clone the repository and run it anywhere:

2. Install globally:

   npm install -g .
   

3. Now you can run the server from anywhere:

   perplexity-mcp

Available Tools

perplexity_ask

• Description: Answer simple questions.
• Parameters:
  • question: The question to ask.

perplexity_chat

• Description: Conduct multi-round conversations.
• Parameters:
  • messages: An array of objects containing roles and content.
  • stream: Optional, whether to enable streaming output (default is false).

Troubleshooting

1. Check the log file for more information:

   tail -f logs/app.log
   

2. Verify that the API key is correctly configured.

3. Ensure that all dependencies are installed and running.

4. If the problem persists, contact the support team for assistance.

How It Works

The MCP server acts as a bridge for Claude Desktop, receiving requests from Claude and routing them to Perplexity's models for processing. The returned results are formatted as JSON and sent back to Claude. The entire process includes:

1. Receiving user input.
2. Forwarding the request to the Perplexity model.
3. Processing the response and returning it to Claude.
