What is MCP with AWS Lambda?

This project allows you to deploy Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers as serverless functions in AWS Lambda. Instead of running MCP servers locally on your machine, you can now run them in the cloud with AWS Lambda's scalability and cost - efficiency.

How does it work?

The adapter wraps existing MCP stdio servers into Lambda functions. When invoked, it starts the MCP server process, handles the request/response cycle, and then shuts down the server - all within a single Lambda invocation.

When should I use this?

Ideal for stateless MCP services that don't require persistent connections or maintain state between requests. Great for distributed applications that need to access MCP services from multiple locations.

Key Features

Serverless Deployment
Run MCP servers without managing infrastructure using AWS Lambda
Automatic Scaling
Lambda automatically scales your MCP servers based on request volume
Cost Efficient
Only pay for actual compute time used by your MCP servers
Advantages
No server management required
Built - in high availability
Easy integration with other AWS services
Cost - effective for intermittent workloads
Limitations
Only works with stateless MCP servers
Requires custom client transport (for now)
Limited to Python and TypeScript servers
No support for server notifications

Getting Started

Package your MCP server
Include your MCP server code and dependencies in a Lambda deployment package
Create the Lambda handler
Write a handler function that initializes and runs your MCP server
Deploy to AWS Lambda
Upload your package and configure the Lambda function
Configure client access
Set up IAM permissions for clients to invoke your Lambda function

Example Use Cases

Time Server
Simple MCP server that returns the current time in a specified timezone
Weather Alerts
MCP server that fetches weather alerts from weather.gov API
