This guide will instruct you on how to set up and run the Tasker MCP integration, including instructions for installing dependencies, preparing the server, and updating tasks.

By following the steps below, you can easily complete the integration and configuration of Tasker MCP. Here is a brief quick-start guide:

1. Install Dependencies:

   • Ensure that Node.js and related tools are installed.

2. Set Up the Server:

   • Prepare and run the MCP server according to the steps above.

3. Update Tasks:

   • Configure custom tasks to ensure that variables and actions are correct.

4. Export the Project:

   • Export the project and generate the toolDescriptions.json file for use by the server.

💻 Usage Examples

Step 1: Import the Tasker Profile

• Import the dist/mcp_server.prj.xml into your Tasker app.
• After successful import, run the MCP generate_api_key task to generate an API Key for secure access.

Step 2: Select and Run the Server

CLI Server:

• Select the CLI server binary file suitable for your device architecture in the dist/ folder, such as tasker-mcp-server-cli-aarch64.
• Copy the binary file and the toolDescriptions.json file to your device (phone or PC).
• After copying, rename the binary file to mcp-server.

Example:

Using scp:

scp dist/tasker-mcp-server-cli-aarch64 user@phone_ip:/data/data/com.termux/files/home/mcp-server

Using adb push:

adb push dist/tasker-mcp-server-cli-aarch64 /data/data/com.termux/files/home/mcp-server

• Run the server in SSE mode:

./mcp-server --tools /path/to/toolDescriptions.json --tasker-api-key=tk_... --mode sse

• Or call via stdio transport:

Command-Line Flags

The tasker-mcp-server-cli application supports the following flags:

• --tools: Path to the JSON file containing Tasker tool definitions.
• --tasker-api-key: Tasker API Key for authentication.
• --mode sse: Run in SSE (Server-Sent Events) mode.

Step 3: Update the MCP Profile

1. Export the Project:

   • Export your mcp_server.prj.xml file and save it to your computer.

2. Generate the Tool Description File:

   • Ensure that Node.js is installed, then run the following command in the utils folder:

cd utils
npm install
node xml-to-tools.js /path/to/your/exported/mcp_server.prj.xml > toolDescriptions.json

• Use the generated toolDescriptions.json file with the server.

Step 4: Configure Task Variables

• Step 1: Add task comments to each custom task to ensure that the content accurately reflects the tool's functionality.
• Step 2: Correctly configure tool variables (such as type, default value, etc.) in the task to ensure that valid tool descriptions are generated during export.
• Step 3: Copy the MCP#parse_args action to the top of the MCP task to enable parameter parsing.
