🚀 Steam MCP Server (Node.js/TypeScript)

This project uses Node.js, TypeScript, and the @modelcontextprotocol/sdk to implement a Steam MCP (Model Context Protocol) server. The server acts as an intermediary, connecting an MCP client (such as Roo) to the Steam Web API, providing structured access to various Steam game statistics and user data.

📦 Installation

Prerequisites

• Node.js (recommended version v18 or higher).
• npm (usually comes with Node.js).

Steps

1. Clone the repository (if not already done):

   git clone <repository-url> # Replace with your repository URL
   cd steam-mcp
   

2. Install dependencies:

   npm install
   

3. Configure environment variables: See the "Configuration (Environment Variables)" section below.
4. Build the project:

   npm run build
   

   This command compiles the TypeScript code into the build directory.

Configuration (Environment Variables)

The server requires the following environment variables to be set:

• STEAM_API_KEY (Required): Your Steam Web API key. Obtain a key at Steam Developer Website. The server cannot run without this key.

This project uses the .env file in the project root directory to load the API key. Create a file named .env and add the following content:

STEAM_API_KEY=Your_API_Key

Note: Ensure that the .env file is not under version control (e.g., exclude it in .gitignore).

Running the Server

After building the project, run the following command to start the server:

node build/index.js

Available MCP Commands

The following is a list of currently implemented MCP commands:

isql:runQuery

Execute an SQL query and return the results. Use the following parameters:

ping:ping

Test if the server is alive.

Connecting a Local MCP Client (e.g., Roo)

To configure an MCP client to connect to this server, follow these steps:

1. Open the MCP client's configuration file (usually located at ~/.mcp/settings.json).
2. Add a new connection configuration as follows:

• name: A unique identifier for this connection (e.g., steam).
• type: Must be stdio.
• enabled: Set to true to activate the connection.
• command: Command to execute the Node.js runtime (e.g., node).
• args: Arguments passed to the command, specifying the path to the compiled server script (e.g., build/index.js).
• cwd: The working directory for running the server (the project root directory).

After configuring, save the file and restart the MCP client. Now you can communicate with the server through this connection!
