🚀 Setting up a Remote MCP Server on Cloudflare

Let's get a remote MCP server up and running on Cloudflare Workers and integrate OAuth login!

🚀 Quick Start

💻 Local Development

# Clone the repository
git clone git@github.com:cloudflare/ai.git

# Install dependencies
cd ai
npm install

# Run the local service
npx nx dev remote-mcp-server

You should be able to open http://localhost:8787/ in your browser.

🔗 Connecting the MCP Inspector to Your Server

To explore the new MCP API, you can use the MCP Inspector.

• Start it with npx @modelcontextprotocol/inspector.
• In the Inspector, switch the transport type to SSE and enter http://localhost:8787/sse as the URL of the MCP server to connect, then click "Connect".
• You'll be navigated to a (simulated) user password login screen. Enter any email and password to log in.
• You should be redirected back to the MCP Inspector and be able to list and call any defined tools!

🔗 Connecting Claude Desktop to the Local MCP Server

While the Inspector is useful, what we really want to do is connect it to Claude! Follow Anthropic's Quick Start Guide, go to Settings > Developer > Edit Configuration in Claude Desktop to find the configuration file.

Open the file in a text editor and replace it with the following configuration:

This will run a local proxy that allows Claude to communicate with your MCP server over HTTP.

When you open Claude, a browser window should open and allow you to log in. You should see a list of available tools in the bottom right corner. Follow the prompts, and the correct prompts will make Claude call the tools.

📦 Create a KV Namespace

# Run the following command in the terminal to create a new KV namespace
cf create kv_NAMESPACE_NAME

⚙️ Update the Wrangler Configuration

1. Open project.env.
2. Add the following content:

   KV_NAMESPACE_ID=your-namespace-id
   KV_NAMESPACE_NAME=your-namespace-name
   

3. Save the file and run the deployment command:

   npx wrangler dev

💻 Using the MCP Inspector

1. Open the Inspector and enter your Cloudflare Workers URL.
2. Click "Connect" to communicate.

💻 Using Claude Desktop

1. Modify Claude's configuration file to specify your Cloudflare URL.
2. Restart the Claude application to apply the changes.

🐞 Debugging Tips

• Restart Claude: If you encounter issues, make sure you've correctly modified the configuration file and restarted the Claude application.
• Clear the Cache: In some cases, clearing the cache files in the .mcp directory may help.
