A Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that provides weather data from the National Weather Service API.

The Weather MCP Server offers weather data sourced from the National Weather Service API. It can be used to retrieve forecasts and alerts, and provides well - formatted data for LLMs.

📦 Installation

Prerequisites

• Node.js (LTS version recommended)
• npm or yarn package manager

Steps

1. Clone the repository:

git clone https://github.com/nakamurau1/weather-mcp.git
cd weather-mcp

2. Install dependencies:

npm install

3. Build the server:

npm run build

💻 Usage Examples

Run the server directly

npm start

Or run directly:

./dist/index.js

Connect with Claude Desktop

1. Edit your Claude Desktop configuration file:

code ~/Library/Application\ Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

2. Add the Weather MCP Server configuration:

3. Restart Claude Desktop.
4. Test the server with the following queries:
   • "What's the weather like in Sacramento?"

Available Tools

get_forecast

Get the weather forecast for a geographical location. Parameters:

• latitude: The latitude of the location (a number between -90 and 90).
• longitude: The longitude of the location (a number between -180 and 180).

get_alerts

Get the active weather alerts for a U.S. state. Parameters:

• state: The two - letter state code of the U.S. (e.g., "CA", "NY", "TX").

📚 Documentation

Limitations

• Weather data is limited to the U.S. region (NWS API).
• There is no historical weather data, only current conditions and forecasts.

Development

• Run in development mode: npm run dev
